Dr. Yaffe and CPBH members have led cognitive data collection in a number of epidemiological cohort studies. Our team has extensive experience investigating cognitive and brain health in the following cohorts:
Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) is an ongoing prospective cohort study following a group of black and white participants from young adulthood to examine the development and determinants of cardiovascular health. Dr. Yaffe leads the CARDIA cognitive ancillary which is focused on understanding life course risk factors for cognitive aging and brain health.
The Health and Aging Brain Study - Health Disparities (HABS-HD) seeks to understand the biological, social, and environmental factors impacting brain aging among African Americans, Mexican Americans, and non-Hispanic whites, with the intent to better understand treatment and prevention of MCI and AD among diverse populations.
The Study of Osteoporotic Factors (SOF) and The Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS) are prospective studies of aging in older women and older men. CPBH faculty and trainees have led critical projects on risk and resilience factors for cognitive decline and dementia, in particular pioneering studies on the role of sleep.
The Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study (Health ABC), a cohort comprised of older Black and white individuals, is an interdisciplinary study of aging with novel data on brain and cognitive outcomes.
Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort Study (CRIC) examines the effect of a broad range of risk factors on the progression of chronic kidney disease and other health consequences. The CPBH team has spearheaded work on the relationship between kidney dysfunction and cognitive impairment in CRIC.
Long-Term Impact of Military-Relevant Brain Injury Consortium - Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium TBI Longitudinal Grant (LIMBIC - CENC) studies the treatment and prevention of traumatic brain injuries (TBI), including a focus on the relation between TBI and risk of dementia.
Veterans Affairs Information Resource Center (VIReC) Data: CPBH faculty and trainees have expertise in leveraging data from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the largest integrated health care system in the United States, to understand medical, military, and social risk factors for dementia.
Health and Retirement Study (HRS): Our trainees have utilized the HRS International Family of Studies to explore the epidemiology of dementia around the world, including both nationwide and cross-national investigations.
UK Biobank is a biomedical database of genetic, lifestyle, and health information from half a million UK research participants. CPBH investigators have applied innovative methods to examine the relationship between a wide array of risk factors and the development of dementia.
