Advanced Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome associated with increased dementia risk

The Yaffe Group has published a new paper, first-authored by Xiaqing Jiang, PhD, investigating the association between Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome (CKM) and dementia risk among community-dwelling older adults in a 15-year longitudinal study. Much like dementia, CKM is increasing in prevalence in the US; however, despite CKM's link to cardiovascular disease - a risk factor for cognitive impairment and dementia in older adults - little is known about CKM's role in dementia risk.

Results from the study found that advanced CKM stages (3-4) were associated with increased risk of dementia even after adjusting for confounders such as metabolic risk factors, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. These findings emphasize the importance of maintaining CKM health when managing cognitive aging in older adults.
